THE
HEALING
HEARTS PROJECT
An installation
to honor those who died on 9/11 and to express our mutual hope for the
future.
I am an artist who lives in Connecticut but also less than ten blocks from
the World
Trade
Center tragedy. I felt the need to respond visually to so much
devastation. I invited people to help create a collaborative piece, which
will be part of our own healing process, and will make a statement that we
as Americans stand united.
In order to participate I have asked people to write down their thoughts
and prayers and create their own special fabric heart to place their
responses in. The hearts are joined together simply by the use of safety
pins, straight pins, or needle and thread that are provided.
The goal of approximately 3,000 hearts has been reached. Each heart will
represent a person lost at the World
Trade
Center. The hearts will be installed in two 13? circles on the floor to
reflect each of the two towers, and also allow for healing, unity and
remembrance.
Schools have participated, and the children were asked to write or draw
their responses about world peace. The project has included individuals,
schools and organizations throughout our country and other countries as
well. The project has been selected to show at a variety of sites, both
indoors and out.
The Healing Heart Project has given participants a voice to express their
feelings, honor lost lives, and those who gave so much of themselves.
